Our City, Our Charter, Our Future
For the first time in nearly 30 years, Angelenos have the chance to rewrite how our city works — and this time, the people are leading.
What’s Happening Now
Los Angeles is rewriting its City Charter, a rulebook for how the city works. It decides who holds power, how decisions are made, and how billions of public dollars are spent.
The current reform process is unfolding, but meetings are sparsely attended, and those who do attend are limited to a single minute to make their voice heard. The issues Angelenos care about most, from housing and policing to AI and climate, aren’t even on the agenda.
Rewrite LA is here to change that. We now have a formal letter of commitment from the Charter Reform Commission endorsing our efforts to help expand public participation, and we’ve issued a joint press release outlining how residents across Los Angeles can take part. We’re opening the doors so the public can help decide what kind of city Los Angeles becomes.
What is Rewrite LA?
ReWrite LA connects storytelling, technology, and civic life to make democracy visible and accessible.
Through storytelling led by award-winning creatives and filmmakers, digital tools that gather public input at scale, and in-person civic assemblies that bring diverse Angelenos together to deliberate on city issues, we’re creating a model for how Los Angeles can lead the next chapter of democracy.
Cultural Storytelling
Timing: Ongoing
We are pairing civic process with creative storytelling. Our media team is documenting this journey and helping people see themselves in local government. We’re launching a Neighborhood Ambassador Program to invite residents from every corner of LA to share their stories, represent their neighborhood’s priorities, and help shape the city’s future. Deliberative Technology
Timing: Ongoing
We are using digital tools to make large-scale participation across LA possible. Residents can weigh in on priorities, share perspectives, and see how their input shapes the process. Anyone with an internet connection can take part, making democracy more open and connected. Weigh in now to share your opinion on what should be prioritized in the charter.
Civic Assemblies
Timing: December 2025 - March 2026
At the center of Rewrite LA is a Civic Assembly, a diverse group of 40 Angelenos who will learn, deliberate, and develop recommendations for the City Council’s 2026 ballot.
Before the full assembly, smaller “Mini Assemblies” will invite residents to tackle pressing charter topics.
